Boxing to keep fit requires lots of stamina

At first glance I was put off, thinking it would be one of those one-sided articles on the sport of a certain race group. But as an avid reader of the Mail & Guardian, who does not skip a page when reading the paper, I delved into the piece.

As I was reading, my interest grew. For one thing, I have recently taken up a boxing class at my gym. Much like white-collar boxing, it is a class for professionals across the colour line to keep fit.

Unlike white-collar boxing, though, participants like me take turns “boxing” with the trainer, who wears boxing pads instead of gloves. The trainer gives instructions on which, and how many, punching combinations a participant has to throw. The participants must do this in the fastest time possible.

Like white-collar boxing, this pad-boxing looks easy, but once one has gone two or three rounds, one is completely exhausted.

It requires lots of stamina, good listening skills and sharp hand-eye co-ordination.

It is a good way to relieve some office stress while leading an active lifestyle. – Mabu Leonard Raphotle, Johannesburg
