ANC wants 70% of KZN vote in 2014

'The ANC probably has the greatest potential to achieve the greatest good for the country at this given point in time.'
'The ANC probably has the greatest potential to achieve the greatest good for the country at this given point in time.'

This emerged when ANC provincial secretary Sihle Zikalala read out the party's declaration that was agreed at the ANC's provincial general council held in Durban.

"The election campaign of the ANC starts here and now. We are saying 70%, nothing less than that," he told delegates.

In the 2009 election the party obtained almost 63% of the vote.

The province's newly elected provincial chairperson Senzo Mchunu said despite challenges facing the party there was no reason that the party should not achieve its target of 70% of the vote.

He said that unity between the ANC and all its alliance partners was critical to the party's success.

Mchunu said that the party needed a properly established youth league.

'ANC needs its youth league'
"The ANC needs its youth league and the vibrancy of its youth league."

He said it was an "urgent task" for the party to ensure that there were youth league structures at all levels of the party in the province.

"The youth league in the ANC brings vibrancy, militancy, new thinking, energy, and we need it. The ANC mould the youth league as future leaders of the ANC. We are by now missing this vibrancy. We are missing this youth power."

He said meetings would be held as soon as possible with the youth league so that they could re-organise themselves.

Mchunu was elected chairperson of the party in KwaZulu-Natal on Saturday.

He replaced Zweli Mkhize who was elected national treasurer general of the ANC at the party's national elective conference in Mangaung last year. – Sapa
