Zuma Appoints Tshabalala As New Sabc Chair

President Jacob Zuma appointed a new SABC chairperson and a deputy on Thursday, the presidency said.

"President Jacob Zuma has in terms of section 13 (3) of the Broadcasting Act 1999 … designated Ms Ellen Zandile Tshabalala as chairperson and Prof Mbulaheni Obert Maguvhe as deputy chairperson of the board of the SABC," said spokesperson Mac Maharaj.

Tshabalala served as chairperson the interim board.

She holds a BComm degree, a postgraduate diploma in labour relations, and an International Bankers Licentiate diploma.

Maguvhe is an associate professor at the University of South African's department of inclusive education. He holds a PhD and master's degree in education studies for the visually impaired.

He is a co-founder of the South African National Association of the Blind and Partially-Sighted and has worked extensively at the South African National Council for the Blind.

Parliament dissolved the broadcaster's board earlier this year after infighting prompted all but one member to resign.

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe announced a new board on September 25. – Sapa
