Thirty-six nominees in nine categories were announced on Monday for the annual Emmy awards, which will take place on the November 25. The announcement – made at the TV and entertainment market, Mipcom, in Cannes – includes nominations from 19 countries including Angola, South Africa and Brazil. "This is the first time that programmes from Angola and Uruguay are nominated," said the Emmys.

From South Africa, Late Nite News With Loyiso Gola (LNN) was nominated in the comedy category and goes head-to-head with the UK's Moone Boy, Workingirls from France and Brazilian show How to Enjoy the End of the World.

Producer of the news parody show LNN Tamsin Andersson said, "It's a great feeling to have this recognition. The LNN team has worked tirelessly and passionately on the show from the beginning and it is humbling and very exciting that the Emmy's have given us a nod."

The eNCA show's anchor, Loyiso Gola, is joined by comedian David Kibuuka, ventriloquist Conrad Koch and his political analyst puppet Chester Missing, to name a few, as they poke fun at the South African politics.

"Late Nite News has become part of our national conversation. It has taught us to laugh at ourselves and see the truth through humour. I … value the hard work and dedication from Loyiso Gola, [producers] Kagiso Lediga, Tamsin Andersson and the rest of the team," said Patrick Conroy, eNCA group head of news.

'MasterChef SA'
MasterChef South Africa was nominated for the Non-Scripted Entertainment prize and will compete with Go Back to Where You Came From (Australia), Reto al Chef 2 (Colombia) and Dear Neighbors Help Our Daughter Find Love (Israel).

Other nominees of the Emmys include the Academy Award-nominated documentary 5 Broken Cameras in the Documentary category, British four-part political thriller Secret State and Sean Bean from the UK, who is nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor category for his role in Accused.

This year's Emmy's will also present two special awards. Director of the new Star Wars movie JJ Abrams will receive the 2013 International Emmy Founders Award and Anke Schäferkordt, co-chief executive of the RTL Group and chief executive of RTL Germany, will take home the 2013 International Emmy Directorate Award.

Emmy winners will be announced on November 25 2013 at the Hilton New York Hotel.
