Seasoned journalist Karima Brown has been appointed group executive editor of Independent Newspapers, chief executive Tony Howard said on Tuesday.

She would take up her post on December 1.

Howard said her appointment followed the first stage of a comprehensive review of Independent's strategy and operations.

"The review will be completed in the next few weeks and will be followed by a reorganisation of the group to optimise its growth potential in the new operating environment."

Before acquiring Independent Newspapers, the current shareholders undertook to introduce an editorial charter to protect editorial integrity, Howard said in a statement.

"A process of drafting a charter is underway. We also intend to announce the mandate and composition of an editorial advisory board in due course."

Brown would form part of an executive team responsible for editorial and content projects to be initiated in the next few months, Howard said. – Sapa
