  • The Artscape Heritage Festival is celebrating heritage month with song and dance based on inspiring stories by political figures and choreographers. The Steve Biko-inspired theatre production, Biko’s Quest, is one of the shows included in the festival’s programme. Biko’s Quest is based on the Steve Biko Foundation exhibition, The Quest for a True Humanity, which portrays the life and death of the anti-apartheid activist. Other theatre productions on the programme include They Died Singing, Rainbow Scars, Izithyilelo zobuze — Nakedness in Revelation and Un-mute, which is based on the life of the deaf dancer Andile Vellem.   • The Joburg Festival of Beer returns for a second year. Beer lovers will be spoilt for choice with a variety of 160 locally and internationally brewed beers. The festival will also host home-brewing demonstrations and food and beer pairing sessions. Exhibitors at the festival include Kyalami-based brewmaster Apiwe Nxusani from Brewhogs, Soweto Gold brewers from Orlando West and Stellenbrau from Stellenbosch, which was the winner of the 2014 Global Craft Beer Award for best lager.   • The first annual Soweto Art Week kicks off this month and will showcase artworks by up-and-coming as well as established South African artists. The five-day art festival will have exhibitions in four different venues in Soweto. One of the exhibitions, Inkunzi Emanxeba; The legacy continues… features works by painter Colbert Mashile, who is known for his contemporary surrealist style, photographer Nontsikelelo Veleko, who is the 2008 Standard Bank Young Artist award recipient, and graphic artist and art lecturer Charles Sokhaya Nkosi.   • In celebration of 50 years in the music industry, legendary musician Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse is taking to the stage once again, for old times sake, to treat his fans to some of his greatest hits at a one-night-only concert, Timeless. Mabuse, who arrived on the music scene as part of the 1970s band Harari, will also perform alongside two surviving members of Harari, “Om” Alec Khaoli and Condry Ziqubu. Legendary musicians PJ Powers and Pops Mohamed will also take to the stage and there will be surprise performances that will only be revealed once Mabuse and his band are on stage. WHEN October 1.   • As part of his 80th birthday celebration, painter Derrick Erasmus is showcasing his new work in the Unmasked exhibition.
