ANC chief whip Stone Sizani says the ANC 'does not want any piece of legislation to produce unintended consequences.
The ANC wants to reassess the passing of rushed legislation, which may lead to it being deemed unconstitutional or excluding certain sectors of society, the SABC reported on Saturday.
“We are walking away from rushing legislation because we want to finish, we have to look at laws thoroughly because we do not want any piece of legislation to produce unintended consequences,” said ANC chief whip Stone Sizani.
“This is one serious issue we have agreed we should relook.”
Sizani was speaking at a two-day ANC lekgotla in Parliament, chaired by the party’s deputy president, Cyril Ramaphosa. He is standing in for President Jacob Zuma.
The ruling party wanted to make sure all laws that were tabled, debated and passed by both Houses of Parliament were in line with the Constitution, Sizani said.
The Traditional Courts Bill was criticised for excluding women. – Sapa
