The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) will not support corrupt candidates in the coming municipal election, its president Sidumo Dlamini said on Saturday.

“We will refuse to support candidates known to be corrupt or lazy,” he said at the federation’s 25th anniversary.

“We are calling on the African National Congress, the alliance and the people as a whole, to ensure that candidates meet strict criteria of integrity.”

He said the federation would support the ruling ANC in the municipal election, laying to rest doubts as to whether Cosatu remains solidly in support of the ANC.

“Yes, at times we have disagreements with the ANC government and we even march against them when necessary. But no other party could have imagined achieving as much as the ANC government has.”

He said although Cosatu would support the ANC at the polls, it would “not give the ANC a blank cheque”.—Sapa
