Igesund To Stay On As Bafana Coach

Gordon Igesund will stay on as the national soccer team's coach, the South African Football Association (Safa) said on Thursday.

"GI to remain as Bafana Bafana coach and to name team to play Brazil on Friday," Safa said via Twitter. "A committee has been set up to probe allegations made by the media."

Igesund was called to a meeting with Safa's technical committee to explain Bafana Bafana's early exit from the recent African Nations Championship (Chan) hosted by South Africa. He was asked to explain allegations in the media that he was involved in inciting senior players to strike for higher bonuses before the start of Chan.

"We want to establish the truth," president Danny Jordaan said after the meeting. "Let us not prejudge the outcome of the allegations. The committee should table its report first. The committee should report within 30 days. It should be swift; the sooner this issue is resolved the better."

Igesund was appointed in July 2012 and signed a two-year contract which expires at the end of June 2014.

The meeting also decided that a clear plan for the next World Cup cycle of 2014 to 2018 was needed and that any decision on team coaches at all levels should take this cycle into account.

It was agreed that Safa needed to strengthen its administrative and technical capacity to ensure it delivered on its mandate and objectives. – Sapa
