The retail price of petrol will decrease on average by 27 cents a litre on August 6, the Department of Minerals and Energy Affairs has announced.
Motorists and petrol-pump attendants will have to use mental arithmetic to calculate how much they owe for fuel when the price goes up on Wednesday as some pumps are not able to handle more than three digits, the South African Petrol Retailers’ Association (Sapra) said on Monday.
Mining operations at Gold Fields’ South Deep mine will resume on Monday, the company said on Saturday, two days after nine workers were killed in an accident. Gold Fields said no mining would take place at South Deep until after a meeting Monday morning between management, unions and a provincial mining inspector.
South African petrol pump prices and wholesale diesel prices will rise sharply next week, the government said on Wednesday, adding to inflationary pressures. The Department of Minerals and Energy Affairs said all grades of petrol would on May 7 rise by 55 cents, or 6,2%, to R9,46 a litre in Gauteng.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) launched a one-day national strike on Tuesday to protest against deaths in the country’s mines, disrupting operations across the world’s top producer of platinum and gold. Almost a quarter of a million NUM members are expected to down tools in the first industry-wide strike on safety.

South Africa plans to extend its crackdown on mine safety and may prosecute mine managers if fatal accidents are caused by negligence. ”I don’t think the mine managers are doing enough to ensure the safety of workers,” said Sandile Nogxina, director general of the Department of Minerals and Energy Affairs.
