African carriers were the only region to show an increase in air travel growth rates from October (12,6%) to November (16,4%).

Travel agent Flight Centre said it was ”blindsided” by the sudden closure of Nationwide Airlines and had gone into a crisis meeting to decide how to deal with the matter, with no information forthcoming from the airline, a spokesperson said. ”We were absolutely blindsided, we were completely unaware,” said Amanda Hardy.
The United States government said this week it wants airlines and cruise liners to take biometric data from foreigners leaving the country under new plans aimed at fighting terrorism and illegal immigration. The US-Visit programme is open to consultation for the next two months.

Tough times are ahead for global aviation despite a return to profit last year, with many airlines mired in debt, rising fuel bills and fears of a looming United States recession, industry officials said on Monday. The global aviation industry returned to profitability in 2007 but earnings of $5,6-billion were only less than 2% of $4900-billion in revenue.

Grounded carrier Nationwide has leased an aircraft from Dutch airline KLM to fly passengers to London on Sunday night, said the South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). However, Nationwide would have to prove that this aircraft complied with civil aviation safety requirements before it would be allowed to fly, said a CAA spokesperson.

Airline passengers will from next year be able to check-in using cellphone technology, a media report said on Friday. The International Air Transport Association said on Thursday that paper tickets, which use magnetic-strip technology instead of barcodes, would no longer be accepted from June.
Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Joseph Kabila sacked his transport minister on Friday after an air crash that killed 52 people in the Central African country, which has one of the world’s worst aviation safety records. The decision was announced as DRC’s Cabinet met to discuss air safety after Thursday’s accident.
