Unexpected progressiveness from Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng is drawing a chorus of approval in legal circles.
The <em>Mail & Guardian</em> has learnt from sources within the JSC that voting went in favour of supporting President Jacob Zuma’s nomination.
JSC member Koos van der Merwe has asked chief justice nominee Mogoeng Mogoeng to withdraw his acceptance of the nomination.
The African National Congress (ANC) said on Saturday that its president, Jacob Zuma, had nothing to do with a judge accused of trying to influence members of the Constitutional Court in cases involving him. Media reported on Friday that the court said Cape Judge President John Hlophe had approached several members of its bench to influence them.
President Thabo Mbeki is blatantly violating human rights, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) claimed in a document handed to Amnesty International on Friday. The party’s chief whip, Koos van der Merwe, handed a written complaint against Mbeki to a representative of Amnesty International in Pretoria.
President Thabo Mbeki needs to urgently intervene to stop Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development Brigitte Mabandla’s ”sadistic games”, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) chief whip Koos van der Merwe said on Wednesday. ”The minister of justice can best be described as a sadist,” he said in a statement.

Floor-crossing will finally be scrapped, a media report said on Thursday. Following on a decision by the African National Congress’s Polokwane conference, Parliament’s committee on private members’ legislative proposals on Wednesday agreed to a draft Bill that will lead to the scrapping of the practice.

A new process of presidential pardons for people who have committed alleged political offences appears in the offing, it emerged on Thursday.
