Are the Afrikaners not free enough?

Some people simply lack a sense of occasion. It gets worse when these are public representatives. There was Freedom Front Plus leader Pieter Mulder smiling to the cameras this week. Feeling good about himself that he had got ”his people” the attention of the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation whom he hoped would extend recognition to the Afrikaners.

Use of army overdue, says opposition

The deployment of the army to areas hit by xenophobic attacks was long overdue, opposition parties said on Wednesday after President Thabo Mbeki’s nod to South African National Defence Force ”involvement”. South African police say 42 people have been killed in violence in Johannesburg that has raged for more than a week and 16 000 have been displaced.

Minister concerned over SABC suspensions

Communications Minister Ivy Matsepe-Casaburri expressed ”great concern” on Wednesday about the suspension of South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) CEO Dali Mpofu and head of news Snuki Zikalala. ”All will be done on [the minister’s] part to ensure the ability of the SABC to carry out its mandate,” she said.
