Three sisters, one child

A woman who was left infertile after chemotherapy to treat cervical cancer has a baby boy thanks to her two sisters — one of whom donated an egg and the other who acted as a surrogate. Alex Patrick’s twin sister, Charlotte Pestell (32), offered her ovum and her older sister, Helen Ritchie (35) carried the foetus through pregnancy.

Romance is back in fashion

A survey released in London on Valentine’s Day indicates that the attitudes embodied in Sex and the City are over — and 2005 heralds a return to romance. Casual sex and pornography are no longer popular and singles are looking to be swept off their feet. Long-term relationships are also back in fashion, according to 73% of the 2 500 Britons interviewed.

Chatroom closure panned

Rival companies have accused Microsoft of cynical commercialism for pulling the plug on its Internet chatrooms. MSN — the Internet arm of Bill Gates’s Microsoft empire — said it took the decision after a series of high-profile cases involving children being abused by adults they had met in chatrooms.
