JR Simplot, the billionaire founder of the Boise, Idaho-based agriculture business that bears his name and who helped make French fries a staple of the American diet and waistline, died on May 25 at the age of 99. After pioneering the first commercial frozen French fry in the late 1940s, Simplot eventually became a major supplier of Idaho potatoes to McDonald’s, Burger King and Wendy’s.

Even the maker of the Idaho Spud candy bar thinks it’s a little weird. But the chocolate-covered, potato-shaped Spud sells at a rate of three million bars a year. ”It’s amazing; I’m not sure who eats them all, or if they all get eaten for that matter,” said David Wagers, president of Idaho Candy.
A woman has pleaded guilty to scalping a teenage girl who had a mohawk hairstyle and blamed the attack on mental illness and her drug addiction. Marianne Dahle (26) entered the plea to the aggravated battery charge as her trial was to begin on Wednesday. She faces up to 15 years in prison.
