Crusaders’ unbeaten run comes to an end

Flyhalf Stephen Donald passed 100 points for the season as the Waikato Chiefs beat the Canterbury Crusaders 18-5 in Super 14 rugby on Friday, ending the first-place Crusaders’ eight-match unbeaten streak. Donald kicked two penalties and a conversion and had a hand in the two tries that gave the Chiefs an 18-0 lead at half-time.

Mills bowls NZ to comfortable win

New Zealand thrashed England by 189 runs in the first cricket Test on Sunday when England’s second innings disintegrated after Kyle Mills ripped through the top order. Set a tempting target of 300 to win in 81 overs, England were all out for 110 with 26 overs and a full session of play remaining.

Innings of 42 was one my best, says Pietersen

England batsman Kevin Pietersen said the 42 runs he painstakingly scratched out against New Zealand on the third day of the first Test was one of the best Test innings he had played for his country. The aggressive and flamboyant Pietersen took 131 balls to make 42, in England’s total of 286 for six at the close of play on Friday.

Cabrera captures PGA Grand Slam crown

United States Open winner Angel Cabrera forced a play-off with an 18th-hole eagle, then birdied the third extra hole on Wednesday to beat Irishman Padraig Harrington and capture the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. The 38-year-old Argentine veteran fired his second consecutive two-under par 68 at the four-man, 36-hole showdown.

All Blacks winger Doug Howlett became the leading tryscorer in Super 12 or 14 rugby as the Auckland Blues beat the Waikato Chiefs 18-11 in an often-bitter match on Saturday. Howlett’s 61st-minute try was his 58th in 97 matches, carrying him past the record mark of 57 tries previously held by Wallabies wing Joe Roff.

Hurricane Tito blows Chiefs away

A 30m dash to the line by veteran lock Paul Tito saw the Wellington Hurricanes snatch victory from the Waikato Chiefs 39-32 right on full time in a Super 14 rugby match on Friday. Hurricane Florence advanced towards Bermuda as residents made last-minute preparations for the storm that was expected to pass by the island on Monday. The storm’s maximum sustained winds eased slightly, to 130kph, but Florence remained a category one hurricane, the United States National Hurricane Centre said.

The sixth tropical storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, Florence, strengthened into a hurricane in the open Atlantic on Sunday, United States forecasters said. The storm’s maximum sustained winds have increased to near 120kph, making it a Category-One hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the US National Hurricane Centre said.

Tom Willis out of rugby for a year

Former All Blacks hooker Tom Willis will not play rugby again this year, ruling himself out of both the Chiefs and Waikato to give his injured back time to heal. The decision is a blow to the Chiefs, for whom Willis was a major influence following his transfer from Otago last season before suffering a prolapsed disc in his back during the Super 12 last April.
