Jamie Bloem, the 30-year-old who captained South Africa at last year’s Rugby League World Cup in England, faces allegations of racial abuse after an incident with a black player in a reserve match.
The Halifax Blue Sox utililty player he is a capable kicker used in the back row and as an outside back became embroiled in a row during a reserve team match against Salford, whose director of rugby Greg McCallum said: “An allegation has been made by a Salford player and we’re still collecting all the data. Halifax have said they will cooperate there are procedures which need to be followed.”
Capetonian Bloem grew up playing union but moved to England to play rugby league for Castleford in 1994. He moved to Doncaster where he was banned for two years for failing a drugs test for steroids. He then spent some time back in union, playing for Racing Club Paris but returned to league with Halifax in 1998.
He made his debut for South Africa’s rugby league Rhinos in 1992.
