Probe under way into E Cape child deaths

An intensive investigation is under way to establish whether contaminated water in the Eastern Cape caused the death of nearly 80 children, the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry said on Thursday. Earlier this week, media reports said nearly 80 children from the towns of Barkly East, Maclear, Sterkspruit and Elliot had died from diarrhoea and other complications.

ID calls for debate on party political funding

Patricia de Lille’s Independent Democrats (ID) are calling on the African National Congress and the Democratic Alliance to join them in setting up a multiparty committee to debate party political funding. ID chief whip Lance Greyling said on Monday: "South Africans have been exposed to scandal after scandal when it comes to party funding."

Cautious thumbs-up for Manuel’s budget

Finance Minister Trevor Manuel’s 2007 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement has received a cautious thumbs-up from some opposition parties. Tabling the budget in the National Assembly on Tuesday, he announced that almost R81,5-billion was to be added to the government’s projected spending over the next three years, bringing spending growth to 6,4% a year in real terms.
