Metro police stage march on second day of strike

Johannesburg metro police will stage another protest march on Tuesday, the second day of a strike that has shut down operations at licensing and testing stations, a spokesperson said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the march would start at about 10am at the Brixton fire station in town and finish at the metro police headquarters in Martindale.

”We will monitor the situation as the strike continues. For today, the testing stations and licensing offices will be closed again,” said Minnaar.

Members of the public who had appointments at Roodepoort, Randburg, Sandton, Langlaagte and Midrand would be phoned to arrange new dates at
no extra cost, added Minnaar.

The protesters say they will not return to work until Metro police chief Chris Ngcobo has been redeployed.

Members of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union on Monday handed over a memorandum at the office of Johannesburg mayor Amos Masondo detailing their demands. – Sapa
