Durban’s taxi drivers to face the music

Taxis drivers who play sound systems too loudly in Durban will soon face the music, the city said on Wednesday.

”The city has been receiving complaints from business and residents about the conduct of taxis,” said Victor Baloyi of the eThekwini Transport Authority.

”These complaints are mainly about the excessive constant hooting, whistling and playing music loud from the early hours of the morning till late in many areas of the city.”

eThekwini Municipality mayor Obed Mlaba said the municipality had launched a ”no taxi noise campaign”, in line with the city’s vision of promoting healthy and secure environment.

”When you hoot and whistle and play loud music, you are breaking city by-laws and road traffic law. This is why we have engaged the taxi industry to form a partnership with us to fight this behaviour,” said Mlaba. — Sapa
