The late ANC MP Peter Mokaba's mother was a pillar of strength in her community, the ANC said on Tuesday.

The Star reported that Priscilla Mokaba (76) died of lung cancer at the Polokwane home of her daughter Mapula on Sunday.

"[We] applaud the role played by MaMokaba and many other selfless mothers like her who would have raised and nurtured a nation during the most turbulent of times in our history," spokesperson Jackson Mthembu said in a statement.

"This role she continued to play even during the democratic dispensation, guiding and leading generations to come to remain true and committed to the creation of a better society for all."

The Star reported that she was one of several political activists jailed in the 1980s. Her son was a former president of the ANC Youth League.

At the time of her death, she was reportedly involved in establishing soccer teams for elderly women and girls, teaching people beadwork, and running a vegetable project. – Sapa
