Thousands rock against Aids in Jo’burg

Tens of thousands of people filed into Ellis Park Stadium on Saturday for a 10-hour music extravaganza beamed to millions around the globe for World Aids Day. The concert at the 50 000-seater stadium got under way in the afternoon and lasted late into the night, with 30 local and international artists performing, ranging from Ludacris to Peter Gabriel.

Hitchcock classic to be remade

The original was trailed by its creator, Alfred Hitchcock, with the promise that ”It could be the most terrifying motion picture I have ever made.” Now, almost 45 years after the release of The Birds, a Hollywood remake is in the works. The new film will star Naomi Watts and be directed by Martin Campbell, who made Casino Royale.

Google hits back at YouTube video pirates

Google has introduced a long-promised video filtering system for its YouTube website. The system is designed to help owners of copyrighted videos crack down on pirated versions distributed over the video-sharing site. The tracking and identification system was developed in response to complaints by large media companies.

Dyeing for the cause

There are days when even the World’s Most Wanted Man looks in the mirror and just feels like the world’s most unwanted man. He stares at his grey beard, sighs wearily at a FedEx-ed package of cave-floor carpet samples Mullah Omar wants him to pick between, and thinks: is there some sharia law loophole that means I could hang out with Scarlett Johansson for a few days, as long we just laugh at funny little Japanese people together and don’t get it on?
