Telkom said on Friday that only about 2 500 employees, or 16% of those represented in wage talks, had heeded union calls to down tools.
Telkom workers from two South African communication industry trade unions will go on strike from August 1 to 5 over wage demands.
The three trade unions deadlocked in a wage dispute with Telkom have been invited to a meeting with the telecommunications company on Thursday in the hopes of avoiding a strike, the South African Communications Union (Sacu) said on Tuesday. ”Yesterday [Monday] the company said it would meet all the unions on Thursday to discuss the dispute,” said Sacu.
Wage talks between Telkom and the South African Communications Union (Sacu) have deadlocked, the union said on Wednesday. This was after the company proposed a 7,7% average increase to all operational employees on Friday during wage talks, Sacu said in a statement.
