Burkina Faso soccer team ‘defaced’ SA flag

The chief executive of the South African Football Association (Safa), Danny Jordaan, on Sunday expressed his outrage at the decision by Burkina Faso soccer team ASFA Yennenga to wear the South African national shirt during their match against Ajax Cape Town in their African Champions League match at Newlands on Sunday.

Apparently, the team only arrived from Burkina Faso with one strip, which clashed with the shirts worn by Ajax. So they went to a local store and bought replicas of the Bafana Bafana shirt and then tried to erase the Safa logo on the pocket and the national flag on the sleeve with a pen. However, the protea was clearly visible.

”It is totally outrageous and shocking that a club arrives in our country with only one set of playing kit which clashes with the home team and then go into a shop to buy a replica of the national jersey,” said Jordaan.

”It is even more disturbing that the match commissioner allowed the match to go ahead.

”We have already lodged a complaint with the match commissioner and we will write a letter to the Confederation of African Football demanding a full report on the matter.

”In the meantime, we will get reports from our officials who were in Cape Town and try to get to the bottom of this matter.”

Jordaan said Safa will keep the public informed of the developments as they unfold.

”We know that national symbols are what define a country and we take the defacing of the flag most seriously,” said Jordaan.
