Missiles fired by United States drone aircraft killed at least three people on Monday in a Pakistani village near the Afghan border.
Thousands of families began fleeing a town in a Pakistani tribal region after three days of fierce clashes between pro-Taliban militants and security forces that killed nearly 200 people. Around 150 militants and 45 soldiers were killed in fighting around Mir Ali, a town known as an al-Qaeda haunt.
Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday ruled out declaring an emergency in an effort to stem a tide of militant attacks that have killed more than 130 people this month. In the lastest violence, militants killed 17 soldiers in the North Waziristan region a day after a suicide bomber killed 16 people in the capital.
