Heineken has acquired controlling interests in five breweries in Nigeria, expanding its capacity by nearly a third in the fast-growing African market.
SABMiller aims to protect its 90% market share in South Africa from rival Heineken, the head of the brewer’s South African unit said on Monday.
SABMiller has a fight on its hands in the premium beer market and the battle was intensified this week with the opening of the Sedibeng brewery.
France prop Pieter de Villiers has announced his retirement, saying he is tired of having to fight injuries. The South African-born player, who won 69 caps for France and five French titles with Stade Francais, said he had taken his decision after injuring his neck in a Heineken Cup match in Cardiff in December.
British spirits group Diageo and Dutch brewer Heineken said on Friday they had agreed to form two new joint ventures in South Africa to combine their drinks businesses and also build a brewery. Diageo, which makes Smirnoff vodka and Johnnie Walker whisky, and Heineken, famed for its lager, said they had teamed up with Namibia Breweries to form DHN Drinks.

SABMiller, the world’s second-biggest brewer, has acquired 94,7% of Grolsch NV shares, securing its €816-million (,2-billion) takeover of the Dutch brewer. SABMiller said in a statement that its bid was unconditional and shareholders who had not yet offered their shares could tender them until February 20.

England hooker Mark Regan was on Wednesday confirmed as captain of the Barbarians team to play South Africa on Saturday despite being warned by his club not to play. Bristol had given Regan the week off as they are involved in a dead rubber EDF Energy Cup match but say they want him to rest ahead of the Heineken Cup fixture.

SABMiller, the world’s second-biggest brewer, has agreed to buy Dutch rival Grolsch for €816-million in cash to strengthen its position in the fast-growing premium beer market. London-based SABMiller, which makes Miller Lite, Castle and Peroni beers, said on Monday it was offering €48,25 a share.
