Whisky, water and Zuma court case postponed

The assault trial of a man accused of spilling his drink on President Jacob Zuma at the Durban July horse race last year was postponed until July 27 by the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.

Magistrate Gugu Mphikeleli was not available to hand down judgment.

The accused, Daryl Peense, said through his lawyer in March that “a small quantity of the whisky and water which he was drinking spilled from his glass”.

Defence attorney Jimmy Howse said Peense had been standing on a balcony when the incident occured.

“The accused was drunk at the time and his drink spilled accidentally. None of the drink spilt [on] the president.

“The accused didn’t intend to cause injury to the president nor to impair his bodily integrity in any way. There has been no complaint by the president,” said Howse, reading from a sworn statement.

The court heard that Zuma did not get wet, and the drink had landed on a bodyguard. – Sapa
