M&G vacancy: Supplements Editor

The successful candidate for the social justice reporting fellowship will pen pieces that go beyond statistics

Position summary:

The supplements editor will be responsible for heading up the team that puts together Mail & Guardian supplements and sponsored content, including flagship projects such as 200 Young South Africans, Greening the Future and Investing in the Future.

This is a high-level position and the successful candidate will drive the strategic direction of this part of the business, which is of vital importance to the M&G. They will also conceptualise new projects for the special projects team in conjunction with the editor and the commercial department.

The supplements team works on print, digital and multimedia projects so an understanding of all types of media is essential for the position, as is the ability to work closely with both the editorial and the commercial sides of the organisation.

Main purpose:

To design and manage a schedule of supplements that add to the quality content of the newspaper by opening up new areas of interest.

Main responsibilities:

  • Manage the supplements from the administrative side through to liaising with the advertising department, commissioning freelancers and overseeing M&G reporters working on the supplements;
  • Write synopses and supplement content where necessary;
  • Ensure synopses for scheduled supplements are provided to the advertising department at least eight weeks before publication;
  • Ensure that copy is filed timeously and deadlines are adhered to;
  • Ensure that supplements are of the same quality as the rest of paper by assisting with the editing of supplement content;
  • Represent the M&G on public platforms such as radio and television interviews and public debates.

Qualifications and experience:

  • At least seven years experience
  • A journalism qualification is advantageous
  • Appropriate business & editorial experience
  • Have industry networks
  • Media background

Knowledge:

  • Have good knowledge of the media business environment
  • A good understanding of economic and industry trends and the interpretation thereof
  • Legislation related to the media industry
  • Understanding of local and global media trends
  • Understanding of the media industry dynamics locally and globally

Skills:

  • Newshound with business skills

Remuneration: Negotiable depending on experience
