Children’s Bill: Be realistic, says minister

Minister of Social Development Zola Skweyiya on Thursday responded to a report that child rights groups are increasingly alarmed at his attempts to fast-track the Children’s Bill ahead of next year’s election. The Children’s Bill is a holistic approach to the rights of all children.

Maharaj, Shaik again absent from Hefer

National Director of Public Prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka’s main accusers, Mac Maharaj and Mo Shaik, were again absent from the Hefer commission’s public hearings on Thursday. Their absence on Thursday again robbed them of the opportunity to cross-examine witnesses who made allegations against them.

Fire forces evacuation of Lagos airport

Travellers and staff were evacuated from Lagos’ Murtala Mohammed Airport, Nigeria’s main air travel hub, on Thursday after a fire broke out in the basement, witnesses said. Thick smoke billowed through the terminal, an AFP correspondent at the scene said, and passengers were ordered out of the building as firefighters arrived on the scene.

DA kicks off election campaign

The Democratic Alliance will launch its national election registration campaign with a rally in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, next Tuesday. Briefing the media at Parliament, DA communications director Nick Clelland-Stokes said the campaign was aimed at unregistered DA supporters, as well those people who were currently undecided about who they might vote for

KZN seeks partners for breeding black rhino

KwaZulu-Natal provincial nature conservation has received at least 20 offers from people who want to become involved in a breeding project for the endangered black rhino. Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson Derek Potter said in a statement on Wednesday that the breeding project would be part of a new programme to increase the numbers of black rhino.

SA ministers to attend London Solidarity Conference

Twelve South African cabinet ministers are to attend a conference with British and European partners in London this weekend to review the country’s first decade of democracy and plan for the next ten years. Dubbed the London Solidarity Conference, the gathering will also be attended by an array of senior corporate, parastatal and government officials.
