There is no ‘I’ in the Ryder Cup

There is no ”I” in Ryder Cup. It’s a lesson the United States players and captains on the past 10 teams have stubbornly refused to learn. Europe won seven of those matches, including four of the last five, and the only US win in that latest run — at Brookline, Massachusetts, in 1999 — required the greatest final-day comeback in the history of the tournament.

Another Paralympic medal for SA

Scott Field, South Africa’s visually impaired swimmer, won his second silver medal of the Athens Paralympics when he finished a strong second in the men’s 400m freestyle at the Aquatic Centre on Monday evening. Field swam four minutes and 30,19 seconds against the 4:28,84 that earned Walter Wu of Canada the gold medal.

Gaddafi comes in from the cold

United States President George Bush has decided to lift sanctions against Libya, which he expects to trigger release of more than -billion to families of the Lockerbie victims, a senior administration official said. Bush could announce the step as early as Monday, the official said on Sunday, speaking on condition of anonymity because Bush prefers to publicise such moves himself.

West Indies captain Brian Lara praised his side’s composure and discipline after they had successfully chased 247 to beat South Africa in London at the Oval and win a place in the ICC Champions Trophy semifinals next week. Big problems for European capital clubs

Capital city clubs Real Madrid, Roma and Paris Saint Germain all suffered shattering defeats at the weekend, which put the jobs at least two high-profile coaches on the line. Real, humbled 3-0 at Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League in midweek, lost 1-0 at Espanyol despite dropping David Beckham and Raul to the bench.

Real coach quits

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said on Monday he has accepted Jose Antonio Camacho’s resignation as coach and appointed his deputy Mariano Garcia Remon in a caretaker role. Real were thrashed 3-0 by Bayer Leverkusen in the European Champions League last week and lost 1-0 to modest Espanyol on Sunday.

Fewer murders, but more robberies in SA

Murder dropped by 9,9%, attempted murder by 1,78% and common robberies by 7,8% in the 2003/04 financial year compared with the previous year, National Police Commissioner Jackie Selebi said on Monday. Robbery with aggravating circumstances rose by 3,2% according to the police’s annual report.
