The Zimbabwe government plans to seize farms belonging to bankers who fled the country last year after being accused of mishandling foreign currency. According to a notice published in the state-controlled Herald newspaper on Tuesday, the state will seize nine farms from directors of two banks.

Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), celebrated its fifth anniversary over the weekend. However, ceremonies to mark the event were overshadowed by the question mark hanging over the party’s participation in next year’s parliamentary election.

Oil prices streaked higher again on Tuesday as traders tracked the path of Hurricane Ivan amid fears of disruption to supplies from the Gulf of Mexico. The price of benchmark Brent North Sea crude oil for delivery in October climbed 43 cents to ,49 a barrel in early deals in London.

The bail application of two men charged under laws against the proliferation of nuclear weapons was delayed in Vanderbijlpark on Tuesday to give lawyers time to study new documents. Randburg engineering company directors Gerhard Wisser and Daniel Geiges were arrested last Wednesday.

At least two Israeli soldiers were wounded on Tuesday when a bicycling Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up in the north of the West Bank, Israeli military sources said. The attack, which was claimed by the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, took place between the town of Qalqilya and the nearby village of Habla, which are linked by a tunnel.

Nearly 68 000 people died on China’s roads in the first eight months of the year and more than 300 000 were injured, state press said on Tuesday. The loss of property in the accidents was valued at about 1,68-billion yuan (-million), Xinhua news agency reported, citing police statistics.

Wage negotiations between workers at Botswana’s four diamond mines and mining company Debswana were settled on Monday on its terms, the company said at a press conference. Debswana did not agree to reinstate workers who had been fired for striking illegally at the beginning of a two week work stoppage.

The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa), the Fuel Retailers’ Association and the Retail Motor Industry will on Tuesday sign a three-year wage deal. The wage agreement will cushion the wages of motor-retail workers by 7,5% and will cover 180 000 workers.

Mozambique and South Africa have decided to abolish visas for their citizens visiting each other’s countries, a senior Mozambican official said on Tuesday. A joint technical team is finalising arrangements so that the new system can come into force soon, even in as little as a month, deputy minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Francis Rodrigues said on Mozambican television.
