George Best was to be buried on Saturday following a grandiose funeral expected to bring his native Belfast to a unified, bittersweet standstill. Best’s body was kept overnight in Protestant east Belfast at his family home, where after a private religious service it will be transported to the Stormont Parliamentary Building.

The United Nations Security Council’s decision to organise a briefing on Myanmar casts the spotlight on the reclusive generals whose disregard for human rights has made the country a pariah state.. The decision came after an Asian human rights watchdog group released what it called the most comprehensive report on torture in Myanmar, accusing the generals of ”brutal and systematic” abuse of political prisoners.

Southern Cape police have arrested a man and woman on rape charges and taken two children into safe custody after a raid on a farm where child pornography was allegedly filmed. Police spokesperson Captain Eddie Cronje said the arrests were made during a police raid on a farm near Stilbaai on Tuesday, following a tip-off from a member of the public.

Sixteen workers were killed and 42 others remained trapped in two separate coal mine accidents in China, state media reported on Saturday, as the toll from a massive mine blast in the northeast rose to 169. The accidents were the latest disasters to strike China’s mines, which are considered the most dangerous in the world, especially in recent years as demand for raw materials has escalated to help fuel rapid economic growth.

An Australian jet’s windscreen cracked mid-flight, causing a major scare when the cabin rapidly decompressed, ambulance officers said on Saturday. A Queensland state ambulance service spokesperson said nine people were treated in hospital for nosebleeds, nausea and earaches after the Virgin Blue Boeing 737 made an emergency landing at Brisbane airport on Friday morning.

The Constitutional Court judgement on same-sex marriages is a step backward that will have serious repercussions on the moral and social fabric of society, the Council of Muslim Theologians said on Friday. ”Same-sex marriages are a violation of the limits prescribed by the Almighty,” the council said in a statement.
