India coach to be censured after finger salute

India’s cricket chiefs plan to speak to national coach Greg Chappell over a rude gesture he reportedly made to crowds in Kolkata last week, an official said on Monday. ”We will certainly discuss the matter at the board’s annual general meeting in Kolkata on Tuesday,” said Inderjit Bindra, former head of the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Vodafone buys more shares in VenFin

British mobile operator Vodafone has purchased another 11,5-million shares in South African investment holding group VenFin for R530,15-million, it was disclosed on Monday. This brings the total number of shares the United Kingdom group has purchased in VenFin so far this month to about 25,4-million.

Teenager dies at circumcision school

One boy has died and eight others were admitted to the Mthatha general hospital after they fell ill at a circumcision school in the area, the Eastern Cape Health Department said on Monday. ”When we got there on Sunday night one of the boys had already died. Two are in a critical condition and the others are stable,” said spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo.

Zimbabwe pays further $10m to IMF

Zimbabwe last Friday paid an additional $10-million to the International Monetary Fund as it seeks to move out of the red, with only $25-million now outstanding under the critical General Resources Account, the state-controlled Zimbabwe <i>Herald</i> newspaper reported on Monday.

Plans to cull Kruger elephants ‘deeply flawed’

People against elephant culling in the Kruger National Park will demonstrate that there are non-violent and non-lethal alternatives when they meet Environmental Affairs and Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk on Monday. The Elephants Alive Coalition said it would also argue that the plan to cull elephants in the park was ”deeply flawed, ecologically and ethically”.

Mbeki appoints advocate Ntsebeza as SC

President Thabo Mbeki has appointed advocate Dumisane Ntsebeza as senior counsel, the South African Broadcasting Corporation reported on Sunday. Ntsebeza is the first African in the entire history of the Cape Bar to be appointed senior counsel, which is the highest recognition in the legal profession.
