Four people died in the powerful earthquake on Thursday that forced thousands of panicked residents from their homes, Mozambique’s government and state radio reported on Friday. The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck on Thursday at 12.19am local time with a magnitude of 7,5.

The petrol price is to decrease by 11 cents per litre next Wednesday, the Department of Minerals and Energy announced on Friday. The new retail price of petrol of R5,52 per litre inland means the retail petrol price will have declined by 8,5% since it peaked at a record R6,03 cents per litre in October 2005.

The JSE’s all share index was in the red at midday on Friday despite the weaker rand and mostly higher European markets. There was little corporate news on Friday to give the market direction. Traders were at a loss to explain the weakness, attributing it to selling ahead of the weekend after a good week on the local bourse.

The Wellington Hurricanes ran in four tries to one in a 29-16 win over gritty South African side the Cats in their Super 14 rugby clash in Wellington on Friday. The Cats defence disrupted the free-flowing Hurricanes backline in a match peppered with errors. Two touchdowns ensured a flattering scoreline for the home side.

England will not be asking for immediate reinforcements ahead of next week’s Test series against India despite the 16-man touring squad being wrecked with injuries and illness. Captain Michael Vaughan was given a cortisone injection to speed up the recovery of a recurring knee injury in time for the first of three back-to-back Tests starting in Nagpur on March 1.

Three hundred South African soldiers are returning from Burundi this week, after completing their protection mission in that country, the defence ministry said on Friday. The Burundi peace mission was subsequently taken over by the African Union, whose mandate for the protection force expired this month.
