Manchester United beat Portsmouth 3-0 on Saturday to move three points clear atop the Premier League standings. Also on Saturday, Liverpool beat Reading 2-0, Everton lost 1-0 at Fulham, Watford beat Middlesbrough 2-0 for their first win of the season, Sheffield United won 1-0 at Newcastle and Charlton edged Manchester City 1-0.

South Africa’s standing in the international golf rankings is set to rise a notch or two in January next year with the launch of the inaugural Jo’burg Open. A public-sector partnership has rallied round the first staging of the multimillion-rand event, to be hosted at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club from January 11 to 14.

Zimbabwe will return to Test cricket in November 2007, almost two years after they volunteered to withdraw from tests because they were not competitive. Zimbabwe coach Kevin Curran announced in September the team will be ready in November next year, and that is ”realistic”, International Cricket Council president Percy Sonn said on Saturday.

The first 100 troops of Liberia’s new army graduated on Saturday, as the country’s vice-president called for a new relationship after decades of military rule and civil war. About 500 people attended the passing-out parade at a Monrovia barracks of the troops, resplendent in new uniforms paid for by the United States government.

The generous tributes paid by the first two black presidents of South Africa to one-time arch foe PW Botha have left many compatriots bemused and warning against a rewrite of apartheid’s history. Botha, regarded as an international pariah during his 11-year leadership of a whites-only government, died last week.

The South African Communist Party (SACP) is outraged at planned retrenchments at De Beers Kimberly Mines, an official said on Saturday. ”We are particularly angered by the company’s decision to close down without proper consultation with the unions, especially the National Union of Mineworkers,” a spokesperson said.
