Wits move up on PSL log

It was no more than poetic justice as Wits University moved into third position in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) log with an entertaining 1-0 win against Bloemfontein Celtic before 5 000 enthusiastic spectators at Bidvest Stadium on Friday night. The fixture was originally played two weeks ago but was postponed due to a storm.

Once upon a time, not all that many years ago, it was all quite straightforward. A writer would write a draft, an editor would edit it, the publisher would publish it and a bookshop would sell it. Today, a book may appear side by side with a chunk of meat, coffee bags or an electric chain saw. Colour coding has become a buzzword.

Israeli troops fire on women in mosque siege

Palestinian women described on Friday how they were shot and injured in the face and the legs by Israeli troops as they led a protest march into the scene of the biggest military incursion into Gaza in months. At least one woman was killed and 10 were injured as large crowds of women walked past tanks into the town of Beit Hanoun.

China pledges to double aid to Africa

China celebrated its friendly relations with Africa on Saturday by pledging to double aid to the continent over the next three years in a summit aimed at deepening political and trade ties with nearly 50 African nations. Chinese President Hu Jintao touted ”the common pursuit of friendship, peace, cooperation and development” with Africa”.

Train surfing claims another young victim

Train surfing in the memory of friends who died playing the deadly sport proved fatal when a 15-year-old died in Soweto on Friday. ”The group of boys said they were train surfing in memory of three friends who died doing the same thing last Friday. One boy fell off the train and died on the scene,” said an emergency services spokesperson.
