New internet technology aids paedophiles

New high-tech advances were making internet crimes against children easier for paedophiles to commit and more difficult to detect, experts told a conference in Australia on Monday. Faster broadband, DSL and cable connections have contributed to an increase in paedophile activity on the internet, the 19th Computer Facilitated Crimes Against Children conference heard.

Bravo cleared over England ‘catch’

West Indies player Dwayne Bravo was on Sunday found not guilty of breaching the ICC Code of Conduct after his controversial catch in the Champions Trophy match against England. Bravo was charged with failing to ”conduct play within the spirit of the game,” after his running catch to dismiss Michael Yardy on Saturday.

DRC votes in peaceful poll

Millions of people in the Democratic Republic of Congo voted on Sunday in the first free presidential elections since independence in 1960, and in the hope of ending a decade of invasion and civil war thought to have killed four million people. The ballot was orderly with a steady stream of enthusiastic voters and few irregularities reported.

Bodies of missing miners found

Rescue teams recovered the bodies of the two remaining miners trapped underground at AngloGold Ashanti’s Tau Tona mine near Carletonville at the weekend. The recovery of all five missing miners was completed five days after the fall of ground at the mine, following two seismic events on Monday afternoon.

Going his own way

Until two weeks ago, Tom Thabane was Lesotho’s minister of communication. Except for a three-year stint when he was living in South Africa, Thabane has served in every post-independence Lesotho government, either as a senior public official or as a Cabinet minister. Thabane had been seen as the heir apparent to Prime Minister Pakalitha Mosisili, but was sidelined in a recent Cabinet reshuffle.

Plans for a global fund to help contain rainforest destruction and slash carbon emissions will be unveiled next month by the Brazilian government. The project, by which rich nations would offer financial incentives to developing countries that combat deforestation, will be announced at a convention on climate change in Nairobi.

Zim battles to extradite hired-gun suspect

The Zimbabwean government appears determined to extradite suspected mercenary Simon Mann to Equatorial Guinea, however, it is being hamstrung by the country’s inefficient legal system.
