Rights groups question Madonna adoption

Human rights groups want Malawi’s courts to review a ruling allowing Madonna to adopt a child from Malawi, an impoverished, Aids-stricken Southern African country, according to one of dozens of organisations involved. Boniface Mandere of Eye of the Child, a local child protection society, told the media on Monday a coalition had banded together.

Police: Situation calm at PetroSA plant

The PetroSA plant outside Mossel Bay was calm on Monday morning after it was hit by a strike last week, Southern Cape police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie said. He said police had set up a joint operations centre along with the parastatal at the plant, which has been shut down for annual cleaning and maintenance, to monitor the situation.

Suicide attack on Sri Lanka military convoy kills 67

At least 67 people, including Sri Lankan navy sailors and some civilians, were killed when an explosives-laden truck driven by a suspected Tamil Tiger rebel rammed into their convoy on Monday. The attack near the town of Habarana, about 190km north-east of the capital Colombo was one of the worst suicide bombings in the troubled Indian Ocean island.

Samora Machel remembered 20 years after crash

South Africa and Mozambique plan to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the death of Samora Machel with a ceremony this week at the site of the plane crash that killed the Mozambiquan leader. South African President Thabo Mbeki and Mozambiquan President Armando Guebuza will pay tribute to Machel at a memorial on an isolated hillside outside Mbuzini in South Africa.

Chelsea face testing time after Cech horror injury

Petr Cech’s surgery for a depressed fracture of the skull has thrown Chelsea’s preparations for Wednesday’s match against Barcelona into disarray, particularly as number two keeper Carlo Cudicini was also knocked out at the weekend. Cech was recovering well following the collision with Stephen Hunt at Reading’s Madejski Stadium on Saturday.

Flintoff searches for positives after loss against India

England captain Andrew Flintoff was pleased with the way his team fought back in a low-scoring four-wicket loss against India in the opening Group A limited-overs international of the ICC Champions Trophy on Sunday. ”I am pleased with the character we showed,” said Flintoff, who returned to lead the England side after spending six months on the sidelines due to an ankle surgery.

Bolton’s strong start to season continues

El Hadji Diouf scored two goals in three minutes on Sunday to help Bolton come from behind and beat Newcastle 2-1 in the English Premier League. Shola Ameobi’s penalty gave the Magpies a 19th-minute lead at St James’s Park, but the Senegal striker punished two lapses in the Newcastle defence with goals in the 55th and 57th minutes.

Goosen eyes hat-trick after victory in China

South Africa’s Retief Goosen retained his Volkswagen Masters-China title by three strokes on Sunday, the first successful title defence of his career. The world number seven shot a one-under-par 71 to finish the week with an impressive 21-under-par 267 total at the Yalong Bay Golf Club. The win was his first of 2006 and the 26th of his career, earning him  550.

Bloemfontein Celtic maintained their unbeaten home record when they beat Ajax Cape Town 2-1 in a Premier Soccer League game in front of a capacity crowd at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Celtic lead 2-0 at the break. From the start, Celtic players were merciless as striker Thapelo Liau scored as early as the fourth minute.
