A bit of Zapiro for Tutu’s birthday

Archbishop Desmond Tutu received an original Zapiro cartoon as a present for his 75th birthday at the University of South Africa on Friday. Upon receiving the gift, Tutu said: ”I am always intrigued because, if you will notice, Zapiro always draws my nose peeping into my mouth. A very big thank you … I am deeply touched and lack words to express my appreciation.”

McClaren denies reports of player revolt

England manager Steve McClaren has slammed suggestions of a player revolt ahead of his country’s European Championship qualifier with Macedonia at Old Trafford on Saturday. According to a report in the Daily Mirror, influential members of McClaren’s squad are unhappy about the introduction of a new 3-5-2 formation and want to use the more familiar 4-4-2 system.

Cases of super TB reported in North West

Ten cases of the extreme drug-resistant tuberculosis (XDR-TB) have been reported in North West, the provincial department of health said on Friday. Spokesperson Lesiba Molala said four people have since died from the disease, while six others were being monitored at the Tshepong hospital complex in Klerksdorp.

UN: Somalis flee conflict to Kenya, Yemen

More than 2 000 Somalis have fled across the border to Kenya over the last two days amid reports of advances by Islamist forces on several Juba Valley towns, the United Nations refugee agency said on Friday. About 30 000 people from Somalia have sought refuge in Kenya since the beginning of this year.

Malatsi: NNP leader should have been in the dock

Former New National Party (NNP) leader Marthinus van Schalkwyk should have been in the dock in the Roodefontein case alongside him, David Malatsi said on Friday. ”I personally feel somewhere, somehow, I was used as a fall guy by some people,” he told the Bellville Regional Court in Cape Town. Malatsi, a former Western Cape provincial minister of environment, was testifying in mitigation of sentence.

Landmark ruling for pension funds

The Pension Funds Adjudicator (PFA) has ruled that pension funds must pay minimum withdrawal benefits, even if a fund’s rules do not require this, the PFA said on Friday. The PFA said this ”landmark” ruling on Thursday was important for calculating benefits paid on resignation.

Mbeki support splits E Cape ANC

Two of the Eastern Cape’s biggest ANC regions, Nelson Mandela (Port Elizabeth) and OR Tambo (Umtata), are starkly divided over whether Thabo Mbeki should continue leading the party. Senior ANC members in the province have expressed ”serious concern” over their dia­metrical opposition, saying ”they are dividing the provincial ANC into two main camps linked to Jacob Zuma and Mbeki”.
