Brown launches bid to succeed Blair

British Finance Minister Gordon Brown on Friday formally announced his candidacy to succeed Tony Blair as prime minister, a day after Blair announced his resignation. Blair on Friday enthusiastically backed Brown’s bid and United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pledged to maintain strong transatlantic ties.

Tiger casts a long shadow

Legend has it that, at the Dubai Classic two years ago, while playing a practice round, the world’s top golfers were boasting among themselves about their prowess and taunting each other about the eventual victor. World number one Tiger Woods was not billed to play, so it was open season for all the players to claim they could bag one of the richest tournaments on the golf tour.

A great achievement, says Ferguson

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has just clinched his ninth Premiership title. This came after an enduring battle with title rivals Chelsea over the course of the season. Money-laden Chelsea have made the league theirs in recent times, but United repsonded to the challenge. Daniel Taylor spoke Ferguson.
