A man in a clerical habit abused me in the church hall of the Johannesburg parish of the Immaculate Conception in Sturdee Avenue, Rosebank. It happened after a children’s Christmas party — and my abuser was a Catholic cleric. My uncle, Cardinal Owen McCann, was the archbishop of Cape Town at the time. His position as president of the South African Catholic Bishops’ Conference was not enough to deter my abuser.

Congolese warlord Laurent Nkunda has declared a ceasefire ahead of peace talks with the government intended to end a spiraling conflict in the country’s lawless east, said a close associate of Nkunda. ”We confirm that we have called a ceasefire,” said Nkunda’s second-in-command, Bwambale Kakolele, on Wednesday.

Heavy rains have caused flooding and rockslides in the southern Cape over the past two days. A group of 60 caravanners had to be evacuated from the Pine Creek holiday resort near the Groot Brakrivier, and the road between Ladysmith and Calitzdorp was closed because of rockfalls.

About 40 people have died in a fire at an oil pipeline after it was vandalised by looters in the southern Nigerian state of Lagos, a police spokesperson said on Wednesday. Thirty-four bodies had been recovered from the site of Tuesday’s explosion, said Lagos state police spokesperson Frank Mba.
