The strike at the Modikwa Platinum mine has been suspended, the National Union of Mineworkers said on Sunday. About 3 000 miners have been on strike in opposition to the continuous operations policy at the mine. The strike cost the mine an estimated R5-million per day in revenue and began on January 26.

Pakistani investigators were searching on Sunday for clues to a bloody suicide bombing in a court after one person wounded in the blast on the previous day died, taking the death toll to 16. The bomber blew himself up in a court in the south-western city of Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan province, while it was in session on Saturday.

Charles Howell III ended a five-year title drought on the PGA Tour with a play-off victory over fellow American Phil Mickelson at the Nissan Open on Sunday. Augusta native Howell, who charged up the leaderboard with three birdies in the last five holes of regulation play, sealed his second Tour win with a four-foot par putt at the third extra hole.

Two homemade bombs exploded aboard a train bound from India to Pakistan sparking a fire that killed at least 66 passengers on Monday in what the Indian government called an ”act of terrorism”. Most of the victims were Pakistanis but included some Indians and three railway policemen.

The embattled principal of the Ithuteng Trust School in Kliptown, Jackie Maarohanye, and 72 other people, have been arrested after a journalist was assaulted and held hostage. Reporter Vusi Ndlovu and driver Mabu Nkadimeng from the Sowetan newspaper were held hostage on Saturday for seven hours.

Nasa astronauts returning to the moon should be given intensive cross-country skiing lessons to help them explore the surface more quickly, according to a former Apollo astronaut. Harrison Schmitt said the technique allowed him to glide over the surface faster than his fellow astronauts.

Israel and the United States have agreed to refuse recognition to a new Palestinian coalition government ahead of talks in Jerusalem on Monday, the Israeli prime minister said on Sunday, reducing the already slim prospects of progress in the peace process.
