An unstabled yearling has died of rabies in the Western Cape, the provincial agriculture department disclosed on Friday. It was the first rabies case in the area in 17 years, said provincial agriculture minister Cobus Dowry. Cautioning against alarm, he said it was probably an isolated case.

Bird flu has hit international news headlines again. Nigeria has reported the first human death in sub-Saharan Africa, the United Kingdom is going through its first outbreak among poultry, and in South-East Asia bird flu continues to simmer, with ongoing outbreaks and human deaths. Africa is where South-East Asia was three to four years ago.

The state’s attempts to use the Durban High Court to obtain documentation from Mauritius amount to an abuse of process, the court learned on Friday. Any attempt to obtain documentation from Mauritius would have to be determined by a criminal court, Thint’s chief executive said in papers before the court.

Durban school pupils who became nauseous and developed a pimple-like rash after playing on their sports field are to be tested for exposure to a toxic chemical, it was announced on Friday. The 36 affected pupils of the Alipore Road Primary School will undergo voluntary blood tests at the suggestion of the chemical company next door to their school.

Former LeisureNet joint chief executives Peter Gardener and Rod Mitchell were not responsible for the collapse of the LeisureNet empire, the Cape High Court ruled on Friday. LeisureNet operated the health and racquet clubs in the country, but was liquidated in 2000 with R1,2-billion in liabilities and assets worth only R302-million.

British police said on Friday they had arrested a 48-year-old man who claimed to have sent one of a series of letter bombs to hit the country in recent weeks. Anton Setchell, the police national coordinator for domestic extremism, said the man had been detained on Thursday under the Mental Health Act after he called a radio station to claim responsibility for a letter bomb.

Carlos Parreira, Bafana Bafana’s new coach, and his assistant do not have legal working status in South Africa, the Department of Home Affairs confirmed on Friday. Spokesperson Mantshele wa ga Tau said Parreira and Jairo Lopes Cesar Leal had arrived in the country on visitors’ permits.

The world’s top diamond producer, De Beers, and the South African government will form a new black-controlled diamond mining company, they said on Friday. The new company, which might later be listed on the JSE, will combine the assets of state mining group Alexkor and the Namaqualand mine unit owned by the South African unit of De Beers.

A man who may be connected to the recent robbery of popular Afrikaans musician Anton Goosen virtually landed himself behind bars on Friday. A Gauteng police spokesperson said this happened after police conducted anti-crime searches in Diepsloot, north-west of Johannesburg.
