Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Tony Leon on Thursday suggested some leaders of big business in South Africa are as cowardly and mean spirited as their apartheid-era predecessors. This was in the light of the pressure brought to bear by Business Leadership South Africa on banking giant First National Bank (FNB) not to go ahead with a planned anti-crime campaign.

Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Thursday vowed that the it would hit back at United States interests worldwide if attacked, amid mounting tension with the West over its nuclear programme. "They should not intimidate Iranian people with these things," Khamenei said, referring to speculation Washington is planning a strike on Iran to halt its atomic drive.

Zimbabwe is using Western sanctions imposed on President Robert Mugabe and his coterie as a convenient excuse to explain its economic meltdown, the United States ambassador to Harare said on Thursday. ”Neither the US nor any other country has imposed general sanctions on the Southern African nation,” Christopher Dell wrote in the independent Financial Gazette.

Jacob Maroga, currently managing director of Eskom’s transmission division, has been appointed chief executive officer designate. A date for the handover will be announced later. Maroga will replace Thulani Gcabashe, who has served two terms as chief executive.

Gunmen kidnapped a Filipino woman in Port Harcourt in Nigeria’s oil-producing Niger Delta, the first known abduction of a woman in the anarchic region, and a Frenchman was seized in a separate incident. Police said gunmen snatched the woman on Wednesday afternoon in a busy street as she was walking between a bank and her car.

Tour de France winner Floyd Landis has said he will not take part in this year’s race, the French Anti-Doping Agency (AFLD) announced on Thursday. AFLD said they had postponed their disciplinary hearing into Landis scheduled for Thursday after the American promised not to participate in any race in France until the end of 2007.

Britain was hit by travel chaos on Thursday as much of the country was covered by a thick blanket of snow at the height of the morning rush-hour. There were delays on railways and roads, while airports across Britain were forced to close as snow and ice made it too dangerous for flights to take off and land.

England captain Michael Vaughan is out of the tri-series finals after failing to recover from the latest flare-up of his hamstring injury, team officials said on Thursday. Indian police may question West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels over his links with an Indian bookmaker to whom he allegedly passed confidential team information during a one-day series in India last month. Police in India’s central city of Nagpur say they have proof of a telephone conversation between Samuels and a bookmaker on the eve of the first one-day international against India.
