Dancing to traditional drums behind an elephant draped in purple, Sri Lankan cinnamon growers are offering part of their crop to pagan gods in thanks at a steady recovery from the 2004 tsunami. ”The tsunami took everything away. My wife, my daughter … goats, cows and my cinnamon,” said wizened Anthony Silva.

The new chairperson of the South African Broadcasting Corporation, Khanyisiwe Mkhonza, paid tribute to the outgoing board in a statement to the media on Sunday. Smokers in France are enjoying their last leisurely puffs on a cigarette over coffee or a glass of rouge before café, restaurants and nightclubs join a nationwide ban on smoking on January 1. Eleven months after smoking was outlawed in workplaces, schools, hospitals and shops, the ban is extending to bars and bistros.

The resolution on climate change adopted in Polokwane by the African National Congress (ANC) is a critical milestone that should be applauded, Marthinus van Schalkwyk, Minister of Environmental Affairs and Tourism, said on Sunday. He said the resolution strengthened the mandate of the government to ”take the tough decisions that will be required”.
