Australia to impose lifetime bans for racism

Fans at Australia’s first Test against India could be banned from the Melbourne Cricket Ground for life if they are found to be involved in racial taunting of players and other fans, Cricket Australia said on Sunday. Anyone caught doing so by undercover surveillance officers would be ejected from the ground and face further action.

Cosmos stuck at the bottom of the log

Jomo Cosmos showed why they are at the bottom of the Absa Premiership table with another insipid performance against Thanda Royal Zulu at the Ackerville Stadium in Witbank on Saturday. The hosts, who lost 2-1, will remain at the bottom of the log until the season kicks off in February.

Chávez signs new energy deal with Cuba

Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez bolstered his cooperation with Cuba on Saturday by signing energy, farming and finance accords, including a deal to expand of one of his socialist ally’s oil refineries. The Venezuelan leader is Havana’s closest ally and the petroleum deals have helped Cuba’s economy stay afloat.

Rain helps England draw against Sri Lanka

Opener Alastair Cook hit a defiant century before rain washed out the last session to help England draw the final cricket Test against Sri Lanka in Galle on Saturday. Left-handed Cook made 118 as England groped to 251-6 in their second innings when a heavy downpour ruined Sri Lanka’s hopes of victory.

No changes as SABC board is announced

Controversial lawyer Christina Qunta has retained her position as deputy chairperson of the board of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). President Thabo Mbeki announced the public broadcaster’s new 12-member board on Saturday, just before he embarked on his annual leave.
