Security forces were on alert on Sunday in the Sunni regions of Iraq where Saddam Hussein drew his most fervent support, as loyalists of the ousted dictator marked the first anniversary of his execution. Police and troops were patrolling the village of Awja, Saddam’s birthplace and where he now lies buried.

Eighty people were arrested for drunken driving and other criminal offences at a roadblock in East London, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday. Superintendent Mtati Tana said the arrests were made in a joint operation between police and traffic officers as part of the festive season crackdown on serious crimes and drunken driving.

Sudan has accused Chadian aircraft of bombing its western Darfur region in what it called ”repeated aggressions” by its western neighbour. Relations between the two African oil producers have been touchy in recent years as both try to quell insurgencies close to their long and porous border.

Australian skipper Ricky Ponting says leg-spinner Brad Hogg will be a better and more confident bowler in Wednesday’s second cricket Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Hogg, singled out as a weakness by the Indian team before the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, responded with four match wickets.

Phil O’Donnell, captain of Scottish Premier League club Motherwell, died on Saturday after collapsing during a match. The 35-year-old midfielder fell to the ground at Fir Park just as he was about to be substituted against Dundee United. The player was carried from the field on a stretcher and taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital.

Arsenal reclaimed first place in the Premier League as Arsene Wenger’s side routed Everton 4-1 to take advantage of Manchester United’s surprise 2-1 defeat at West Ham on Saturday. The Gunners moved two points clear of United thanks to Eduardo’s double strike and late goals from Emmanuel Adebayor and Tomas Rosicky.
