A lawmaker for Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF has appeared in court charged with leading supporters in a riotous protest brandishing a gun, a state daily reported on Thursday. The government-mouthpiece <i>Herald</i> said Isaiah Shumba, a former deputy education minister, was released on bail by a magistrate in south-eastern Masvingo on Wednesday.

The Cape Cobras cruised to a third successive victory in the MTN Domestic Championship at Newlands on Wednesday, beating the Lions by six wickets with four overs to spare. Former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming is retiring from international cricket at the end of next month’s home Test series against England, he told a news conference in Auckland on Thursday. Double-amputee sprinter Oscar Pistorius has asked world sport’s highest court to overturn a ruling that he is ineligible to compete in the Olympics. The International Association of Athletics Federations ruled last month that the South African cannot participate in the Beijing Games because his prosthetics give him a clear competitive advantage.

Philippines security officials said on Thursday they had uncovered a plot by Islamic militants linked to the al-Qaeda network to assassinate President Gloria Arroyo. Her security chief, Brigadier General Romeo Prestoza, said Arroyo had been informed of the threat, which forced her to cancel a scheduled trip on Friday to the northern resort city of Baguio.

Fresh clashes were reported on Wednesday between armed groups in a troubled region in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in breach of a three-week-old ceasefire. Soldiers loyal to rebel General Laurent Nkunda and Mai Mai militiamen exchanged gunfire in towns north-west of Goma, the capital of Nord-Kivu province, a local official said.
