Els buoyed ahead of run to Masters

Two tournaments and two top-10 finishes to start the season have buoyed Ernie Els as he switches his focus to the United States in preparation for the Masters at Augusta in April. Mallett frustrated by Italy mistakes

Italy’s South African coach Nick Mallett said he was frustrated by his side’s two crucial first-half mistakes that cost them a first-ever victory over England. Italy lost 23-19 at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico in the Six Nations on Sunday in a match where they came as close as ever to beating England in 14 attempts.

‘Tired’ JSE led down by weak world markets

A tired-looking JSE was 89 points in the red by noon on Monday as weak global markets continued to weigh. By midday, the broader all-share index had shed 0,32%. The gold-mining index pulled back 1,42%, resources added 0,05% and the platinum-mining index was up 0,97%. Industrials fell 0,77%, financials were down 0,29% and banks gave up 0,29%.

Arsenal stay top as United and Chelsea falter

Arsenal were left two points clear at the top of the Premier League table as rivals Manchester United and Chelsea both dropped vital points on Sunday. Manchester City completed a first league victory at Old Trafford since 1974 and a season double over Manchester United with a 2-1 victory thanks to goals from strikers Darius Vassell and new signing Benjani Mwaruwari.

Optimism at Kenya talks, negotiators urge patience

Negotiators for President Mwai Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga re-started talks on Monday in a mood of national optimism that a political solution to Kenya’s worst crisis since independence may be near. Mediator and former United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan has predicted the two sides will agree on a formula this week to overcome their dispute.

Doctor arrested over Indian kidney racket

An Indian doctor suspected of being behind a kidney transplant racket was arrested in Nepal on Sunday and paraded before journalists in the capital, Kathmandu. Amit Kumar is accused of running a hospital just outside Delhi which allegedly lured or forced hundreds of poor people into giving up their kidneys.
