Soapie star’s comments anger ANC

The African National Congress (ANC) has lashed out at a popular soap opera actress for claiming the ANC murders its opponents, and is considering legal action against her. The actress, Winnie Ntshaba, who plays Khethiwe in the soap opera Generations, was speaking at an Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) gathering.

Mbanjwa’s river of dreams

A sponsored Opel Corsa van with ”Michael Mbanjwa, Dusi Gold Medallist” printed on the sides pulls up at Germiston Lake on Gauteng’s East Rand. As the driver’s door opens, out jumps Mbanjwa (24), who made history last weekend when he became the first black African to win the Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon.

The Aussie Open’s Serbian darling

Wimbledon crowds could learn a lot from the Australian Open. Like the British, the Australians have no players to speak of, so they do the next best thing and adopt a few for the purposes of the fortnight. They fell in love with Martina Hingis. It was with growing astonishment, anger and finally disgust that I read Corné Krige’s recent comments on new Springbok coach Pieter de Villiers. The most nauseating part of what read like a racist attack by the former Bok captain on De Villiers was a line from his final paragraph.

Survey shows SA wealth gap widening

South Africa’s wealth gap is widening and the average black citizen still only earns an eighth of what his white counterpart does nearly 14 years after the end of apartheid. In its annual survey, the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation, said inequality rose from 0,60 in 2006 to 0,62 last year on a zero to one scale.

Sri Lanka army kills 30 rebels, planes bomb north

Sri Lankan warplanes bombed a Tamil Tiger base in the far north on Friday, a day after ground troops killed 30 rebels in clashes across the region. Seven soldiers were killed in the battles on Thursday, the latest in an intensification of the 25-year civil war following the official scrapping of a truce with the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
